Fishing vs phishing
An email was sent to hundreds of BNZ customers advising them to update their account
preferences by entering their details using a link that directed them to a site overseas.The site was taken down on Monday morning by the bank’s fraud department.
BNZ head of fraud and security Mike Burn says the bank has a standard response to
fishing scams of this kind, which is to contact the site’s service provider.Mr Burn says fishing is reasonably common.
